Free fitness memberships for older adults now available in Mississauga
Seniors aged 65+ can access gyms, pools, and fitness centres—including Burnhamthorpe Community Centre—at no cost, starting April 1.
Staying active just got easier for older adults in Mississauga. The City has introduced a new free fitness membership program for residents aged 65 and older (specifically the 65+ Fit membership), giving them unlimited access to fitness centres, indoor walking tracks, and public swims at participating community centres. This initiative, aimed at promoting health and well-being, is expected to benefit over 130,000 seniors across the city.
For Applewood residents, this means a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of the Burnhamthorpe Community Centre’s fitness centre, which offers a variety of exercise equipment and group fitness classes tailored to different skill levels. Whether you’re looking to maintain strength, improve flexibility, or simply stay active, this membership makes it easy and accessible.
Other participating locations include River Grove, South Common, Malton, Meadowvale, Erin Meadows, and Frank McKechnie Community Centres, among others. The membership includes access to cardio and weight-training areas, along with specific drop-in classes designed for older adults. Additionally, public swim sessions are included for those who prefer low-impact workouts.
Registration is completely free and can be completed in person at any participating facility. Proof of age and residency in Mississauga are required. With affordability often being a barrier to fitness programs, this initiative removes financial obstacles, ensuring that seniors can prioritize their health without added costs.
Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie emphasized the importance of keeping seniors engaged in the community, highlighting the program as part of the city’s commitment to active living for all ages. With Applewood’s growing senior population, this initiative is particularly valuable for locals looking for convenient fitness options.
For those in Applewood, Burnhamthorpe Community Centre is an excellent choice, providing modern facilities and a welcoming environment. Whether it’s walking on the indoor track, lifting weights, or joining a group class, there are plenty of ways to stay fit.
